Light and space at Lough Rynn Castle

Lough Rynn has one of the biggest estates of any wedding venue we film at, and here is the honest thing about that: your guests will barely see it. The grounds run to hundreds of acres along the shore of the lough that gives the place its name, and a wedding day gives people a lawn, a terrace and whatever they glimpse from the car on the way in. The scale is real but it is mostly experienced as an idea rather than a place.

We mention it because couples sometimes book a venue for the grounds and then build a timeline that never goes near them. If the estate is why you chose it, put a walk in the schedule and protect it. Otherwise the film will show a beautiful house and a very small amount of the land around it.

The good news is that the inside of this building is strong enough to carry a film on its own.

Why the interiors work so well

High ceilings are the first thing. Rooms with height give a camera somewhere to breathe, and they stop a crowded reception feeling compressed on screen. Low ceilings are one of the quiet reasons some hotel weddings look flat on film, and that is never a problem here.

The glass walkways are the second, and they are the reason we like filming here as much as we do. Natural light coming in from the side, all day, in a part of the building people naturally move through. Guests pass along them between rooms without being directed, which means we get unposed footage in genuinely good light. That combination is rarer than it sounds.

Filming in a castle that behaves like a hotel

The building is grand but it runs smoothly, and there is enough indoor space that a wet day changes very little about your wedding. In the west of Ireland that is worth a great deal. We have filmed here in weather that would have flattened a marquee wedding and the day was completely unaffected.

The walled garden and the lough

There is one part of the estate we would not let you skip. The walled garden is a two minute run from the castle by golf buggy, usually with the venue's own chauffeur at the wheel, and it is where we bring couples for photographs every time we film here. It is a stunning spot, with its folly and its views out across the lough, and ten minutes there hands your film the water and the greenery the estate is named for without costing you any real time with your guests.

Making the most of it

• Take the buggy to the walled garden. Lough Rynn takes real care of their couples, and the buggy run is there whenever you want it. It is the best portrait spot on the estate with the iconic red bridge, gorgeous manicured walkways, and a folly with a lough view!
• Use the glass walkways in the afternoon. Tell us if you would like ten minutes there. It is the best light in the building.
• Do not fear a wet forecast. This is one of the few venues where rain barely dents the film.

If you want a wedding that looks and feels grand without depending on the weather, this is a very safe choice, and a genuinely lovely one.
